     VW closes Uitenhage plant as NUMSA strike starts
Volkswagen of SA shut down its Uitenhage plant on Wednesday because of a strike by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) in the component industry. "Volkswagen of SA was regrettably forced to close its Uitenhage-based production plant indefinitely after the morning shift today," the company said in a statement.

     Toyota recalls 1.33 million Corollas
Toyota recalled 1.33 million Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks in the U.S. and Canada on Thursday because their engines may stall, the latest in a string of quality problems at the Japanese automaker. The recall covers vehicles from the 2005-2008 model years sold in the U.S. and Canada. Three accidents and one minor injury have been reported, though Toyota said a link to the engine issue has not been confirmed.

     Toyota recalls 412,000 cars in US to fix steering
Toyota is recalling nearly half a million cars, most of them large sedans sold in the U.S., for problems that can cause the steering wheel to lock up. Its the latest indication that the automaker is still struggling with vehicle problems even as it works to overhaul quality control. The recall, announced Thursday, affects 412,000 vehicles in the U.S. -373,000 Avalon sedans and 39,000 Lexus LX 470 SUVs.

     Nissan recalls 46,000 hatchbacks over fuel spills
Nissan is recalling 46,000 of its Cube hatchbacks because of possible problems with fuel spilling during rear end collisions. In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan said Monday tests conducted by NHTSA safety regulators found more fuel spilled than federal standards allow.

     Toyota to recall 270,000 cars worldwide
Toyota Motor Corp. announced Friday it will recall 270,000 vehicles worldwide, including luxury Lexus sedans, to fix faulty engines. The recalled vehicles include seven Lexus models as well as the popular Crown, Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco said. Of the 270,000 cars, some 180,000 were sold overseas and 90,000 in Japan.

     Toyota to recall 12,000 Lexus vehicles
Toyota Motor Corp. is to recall around 12,000 Lexus vehicles due to a steering system defect, a report said Wednesday, in the latest embarrassment to hit the Japanese auto giant. Since March, Japan’s transport ministry has received 12 reports of electrical problems causing the steering system to malfunction for a few seconds, the Yomiuri Shimbun daily reported, citing unnamed ministry sources.
